Smile Video Display Size Confusion

Hi, since reinstalling Ubu9.04 from disk, I'm unable to view many MP4 videos. My laptop only has 3 settings for res. Here's some lshw:
description: Computer

and some ~$ xrandr:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

640x480 59.9 59.4
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

And some attempt at adding a higher value in xorg.conf:

-laptop:/etc/X11$ cd xorg.conf
bash: cd: xorg.conf: Not a directory
-laptop:/etc/X11$ xorg.config
bash: xorg.config: command not found
-laptop:/etc/X11$ edit xorg.conf
Warning: unknown mime-type for "xorg.conf" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Error: no write permission for file "xorg.conf"
-laptop:/etc/X11$

Any help greatly welcome, while I'm researching Permissions, and studying the Users tute I just spotted in this forum.
For instance, am I getting warm?

It seems that I either have to add an entry to xorg.conf of high res.
OR increase value of (dot)clock which seems to be at 66.
Both of which are proving hard.
It also seems that I'm the only person in the solar system who has had this issue

First of all, you need to be root to edit your xorg.conf file or to change mode on your xorg.conf file.

Please show us your xorg.conf file and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Instead of making your comments blue, wrap command output in [code] tags.

Thanks MTK, snooping around here for code-tag-wrapping tool right now.
No sarcasm, little tips like that are great, and no harm in having to look more carefully at toolbars etc.

Found it, that was EASY

Code:
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.

You posted only part of the Xorg.0.log file twice. We need to see the full log file and the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Sorry! Here's Xorg.O log file. There's another there called (old)but for now I'll go get the xorg.conf one, will have to hunt a little.
Oh, before that I apparently have to break this one up into 4 posts!
I dont know a sane way to do this, so I have here erased the first two thirds of the 80000 characters, hoping that it's as relevant as it looks. And now I'll go for the xorg.conf.
(By the way, I'm fetching these files by copy/paste, is that right?)
There'll be overlap as I get the other sections, cos not possible to be sure where I am in it, will just take two more chunks of about the middle and top thirds of the file.

I was rather hoping there was such a thing!

I'm not sure what you are expecting, but your BIOS is claiming to support 1024x768 as it's native resolution:

Code:
(II) RADEON(0): Panel Size from BIOS: 1024x768
And

Code:
(II) RADEON(0): Printing probed modes for output LVDS
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 (48.4 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "800x600"x60.3 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "800x600"x59.9 38.25 800 832 912 1024 600 603 607 624 -hsync +vsync (37.4 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "640x480"x59.9 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "640x480"x59.4 23.75 640 664 720 800 480 483 487 500 -hsync +vsync (29.7 kHz)
Your LVDS monitor is telling the driver it only supports those three resolutions.

Are you 100% certain it supports more than just that?

Adam
