vidalia (tor) working or not?

hi,
i use proxy connection to connect to Internet.
i recently installed and configured tor(along vidalia). and somehow it shows green onion(connected) after few config changes.
but i am not sure if its working or not! i tried socks 127.0.0.1:9050 in deluge torrent client and waited for an hour but nothing happened.i tried reconnection vidalia few times and it connects each time but the torrent's not showing any movement.
i tried visiting 127.0.0.1:9050 it says

Tor is not an HTTP Proxy

It appears you have configured your web browser to use Tor as an HTTP proxy. This is not correct: Tor is a SOCKS proxy, not an HTTP proxy. Please configure your client accordingly.
So whats going wrong? PLs help!

ps : torrent is verified i already downloaded that torrent through windows!

Perhaps I misunderstood your motivation for using Tor, but please don't tunnel your BitTorrent traffic over it: not only does it significantly degrade the quality of the network for everyone else, you're being lured into a false sense of security, as it doesn't significantly improve the anonymity of your BitTorrent traffic (BitTorrent was designed with efficiency in mind, not privacy, and accordingly the protocol will leak information about your identity in a way that Tor doesn't - and can't - address).

The reason your torrent may be failing to download is because an increasing number of exit node operators, realising that people were ignoring pleas not to use Tor for tunnelling BitTorrent traffic, are now actively blocking it.

+1 Tor is for web browsing, not for downloading or using bittorrent.

Take a look at i2p for other uses.

A vpn is your best bet for using bittorent.

Did you install polipo?
Once you have started Tor you can go to this site to verify if it is working, https://check.torproject.org/
I have to agree with the others about using Tor for downloading.

thanks for all your replies, i'll keep that in mind.

Actually i havent downloaded privoxy which allows 8118 http port from tor. So just for checking whether my tor's working or not, i checked my socks5 port with that torrent (As i already stated i already have that torrent from windows). As because some people believe that socks can't handle browsing connections properly, it's for raw data transfer only!

And yes i visited https://check.torproject.org/ and also whatismyipaddress.com , my tor's not seeming to respond! how do i fix it?

anyway, i found solution for my problem,

for peoples using internet through proxy connection, must install privoxy to gain http port 8118 for surfing,

to configure tor
http://www.noobrescue.com/blog/vidal...d-unexpectedly

to configure provixy
http://www.marcus-furius.com/?p=189

socks 5 not working yet, but http is!

That will work, but Polipo will also do the job which is why I asked if you had it installed.

SOCKS can be used for browsing. From the Tor web site's "general FAQ:"

Quote:

I need an HTTP proxy. Where did Polipo go?

In the past, Tor bundles included an HTTP proxy like Privoxy or Polipo, solely to work around a bug in Firefox that was finally fixed in Firefox 6. Now you don't need a separate HTTP proxy to use Tor, and in fact leaving it out makes you safer because Torbutton has better control over Firefox's interaction with websites.

If you are trying to use some external application with Tor, step zero should be to reread the set of warnings for ways you can screw up. Step one should be to try to use a Socks proxy rather than an http proxy — Tor runs a Socks proxy on port 9050 on Windows, or see above for OSX and Linux.

If that fails, feel free to install privoxy or polipo. You can use our old polipo config file if you like. However, please realize that this approach is not recommended for novice users.

Have you spent any time at the Tor web site reading the documentation? All your questions will be answered and solutions to your problems are all there in black and white.

And i understand using tor for file sharing isn't a good idea. But i dont really know any other way to do so. Can you refer me a tutorial to use VPN for torrents? It'll be much appreciated.

Not working with what browser?
If you will just go to the tor web site and read the documentation you will find the answers. Sorry, I can't help you.
Good luck.
