VIA AC97 audio problem

HI, I know that this question has been asked before hundred of times, but when I checked their sugestions and try them myself, I still get problems. So that's why I am asking for help.

I am running Red Hat 7.3 and Kernel is 2.4.18-3
-I downloaded the alsa driver 0.9.7 into /home/jim
-Then, I unzipped it in the same folder /home/jim
-Then I went into the alsa-driver directory
-Then I run ./snddevices, everything seems to be fine
-Then I run ./configure, but after running this command I get a message saying that it can't find the kernel. So I try ./configure --with-kernel=/usr/, because it's in that directory where the linux folder is.
-After that I type make, and I get a bunch of errors.

What did I do wrong?

Help please, I have been looking for help in the internet but it seems that people didn't have problems with make.

Alright, here's what I'd try.

What do you get from the command :

modprobe via82cxxx_audio

?

My experience has shown me that the newest ALSA drivers for my onboard via AC97 card SUCK. the OSS drivers included in the kernel seem to work much much better for this card.

You might already have those OSS drivers as part of your kernel
