VGA to Tv

I'm using an apple computer but running Linux mint 6, and I want to connect to a Tv via VGA cable. I have Mini Displayport for the apple, but my Tv has there is no signal. When I checked the Display in the settings there was only the Computer monitor. Is there an extra step I need to do?

before we take a step further, which version of linux mint are you really running? 6 is looong outdated, and i'm not sure if even 16 is still supported.
please check the linuxmint web pages whether you are running a current version of linux mint.

TV or Computer has to conform to the others standard or be switchable in setting or automatic.

They used to sell a gizmo that converted the signals from a pc to a tv if you didn't have support.

I'm using Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela. It is a newer Tv and works when it is hooked up to a windows computer.

Vga out worked out of the box on my 52 inch Plasma TV in the Motorcycle Shop before the TV died.
No keycode was needed to switch to vga because is was a Desktop Machine .

If I was you. I'd look for the Mac Manual for switching to external vga on your laptop 1st.
The search the internet for getting that hotkey working in mint if it does not work out of the box. The TV has to be set to the right channel also to accept PC
input. The TV manual online should tell you how to do that.

It would be easier to boot linux on the windows computer (usb or live) and see that it works.
