Can anyone advise me of a generic Linux command that will let me know how much VGA memory is in a workstation, what ever version of Linux

Many thanks in advance

lspci -vvv can give you that information.

since lspci will display the information about all cards it might be better to narrow it a little bit:

lspci | grep VGA

will produce for example following output
0000:01:00 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 NE [Radeon]

Now lspci with the verbose option against the card

lspci -s 0000:01:00 -v

or if you want all informations

lspci -s 0000:01:00 -vvv
