Very Basic Samba Setup

Hi all,

I would like to set up a Samba sever for my home network, and I don't need a whole lot of functionality for it, but I need some help.

I have an old machiine (p3-733, 128 MB RAM) with two hard drives in it. The first is a 20 GB, and the second is an 80 GB. The first has Mandriva 2006 installed on it, with all the required packages (samba server, etc.) The 80 GB drive is formattted as FAT32 and mounted to a directory I created called /data. I chose FAT32 because my girlfriend runs XP on her machine, and I run Linux on my laptop. I would like the 80 GB drive to be a common storage place where we can combine our mp3 collections and store documents without weighing down our own personal machines.

So I've been having some trouble getting things off the ground, and google hasn't been much help. I set up all the machines in the house to the same workgroup, whether through XP or linux, and have given the /data folder a share name for the network.

However, neither my laptop nor my girlfriend's desktop can see the server. I don't really have more information than this. I've tried connecting via IP address and standard Windows networking syntax (i.e. //server/share) and am having no luck.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Update: The windows box will now see the server, but cannot access the shares, so I think I have a permissions issue on my hands. I'll mess with some .conf files and see what I can do. Still welcoming submissions if anyone has ideas.

Have you setup users on the samba server and setup smbpasswords for them?

If your XP PC is only going to be accessing the share via Samba, the share volume doesn't need to be fat32. There are stacks of threads here with people having problems setting permissions on fat32 volumes. It would be better to have that file system set up as reiserfs, ext3, etc.
