Can some one walk me thru the connection process. I've used the rp-pppoe rpm but I think the is a version conflict. Can some one help out??? PLease...

I f you get an inexpensive router.
I.e. SMC barricade, it will maintain the pppoe connection for you and you use it as a gateway. Simple and secure.

You know, I use Verizon, and they gave me this gray DSL modem, no router to config, just start up Linux, and get on net, nothing else.

I use verizon as well. but I wanted more than one puter connected. I plugged in the appropriate numbers in the router and each puters config and voila. No disc to insert noopppoe software.

This way I am also safer as the router gets an IP and I use private one for my internal nwork

Chad, it is not a positive thinking, even though you are Open sourced (and I encourage everybody I know to follow the steps of open source development) you are danger to others, think about it if you don't take any security precautions, and as you claim you've got nothing to hide, somebody else does, and your machine in the hands of a cracker/script-kiddie can be used as an amplifier to cause DoS or DDoS to other hosts, even to microsoft.com. So I advise you, put something on defense - com'n you are a millitary man, and at least you have a knife even though you might never use it in the purposes other than cutting bread and spreading butter.

As for Verizon problems, make certain what method of obtaing IP your ISP uses, DHCP or PPPoE? In the later case, I know that RH provides crippled rp-pppoe package that doesn't contain configuration tool, head to http://www.rouringpenguin.org and get the source for rp-pppoe, once unpacked run ./go for text driven configuration or ./go-gui if you prefer GUI fron-end, fill in the blanks, and start your connection with tkpppoe.

ha ha ha, good part about the knife bit. Since I am on the subject, I will go ahead and give you a glimpse at my "military" combat knowledge...


Hospital Corpsman (which is what I am first, pharmacy tech second even though right now my primary job is pharmacy tech...) are sent to war with Marines. They are the "doctors" for the Marines basically. So we get some decent training with the Marines in Combat skills and such. This school is known as Field Medical School, and it's taught at Marine bases. The training is given by Combat Marines (aka grunts) and is very intense.
So even though I am a weak, fat, lazy pharmacy tech now, the knowledge has been given to me, and can be easily used if ever needed.

My brother-in-law built a small firewall for me and I switched from Verizon to DirecTv so I could receive incoming connections. Verizon blocks everything out pretty well (in my subscription area at least). Now I can host my own site! (once I get apache running again. )
