vector linux GUI screen problem

I cant get my vector linux to work on a 800 X 600 resolution with fluxbox.. the highest I can go is 640X 480 or something after that the screen turns all weird... I used vasm to reconfigure it but doesnt help at all. My redhat used to work at 800X600.. any suggestions?

I'd have to know a little more about your setup (video card ect...) and which version of VL your tring. I had a similar problem tring to install VL 4.0 on my laptop and came to the conclusion that the version of XFree86 (4.3) was incompatible with the video in the old beast (128 bit magicgraph w/ 2 mb vram)
. Give an older version of VL a try, 3.0 runs great on my old laptop including X!
VL 3.0 will give you the option of installing XFree 4.2.1, or 3.3.6 which may work better with an older video card.

hi,

did you make sure you looked up both the monitor resolution AND screen depth? vasm leads you to both, but i also didnīt recognize it the first time.

so, choose your default 800x600 res at _monitor_ and afterwards select the appropriate screen depth from _screen_ which should help.

i had the same problem with setting up x at 800 to 600 as i got only 640x480 as you did. since i changed the screen depth to 16 bits, it works fine.

NOTE it works fine with MY notebook, so 16bits may NOT be the appropriate resolution for YOUR display.

hope i could help you!?

best,

bavarian

hi again,

i looked it up in vasm and found that the 640x480 disappears only when i disable the option for 640x480 at the screen setup (in vasm). the only resolution i enabled was 800 to 600, and only with that procedure my display works in 800 to 600.

note that vasm is trying to save the file, even when you try to quit without saving--so lookup only wonīt be possible even when you choose _cancel_ instead of _ok_. at least this is how my vasm behaved two hours ago.

funny stuff that people do during their lunch breaks ...

its quite hard to set up the screen correctly if you donīt know what parameters will be the right ones. as i didnīt have any information about my notebook display beyond those that are obvious, i had to try it out just like you. but once configured, vector runs fine and i donīt want to miss it!

thats nice you got it to work. i had a Tecra 133 labtop that would blind me if i put it at 800x600. the only way i got it to work was by setting the colors way low. i tried and tried but never got it to work.

what are you running it on now?
