Vector Linux - Another Success !!
 

I just got and installed the Vector Linux 3.2 it is great and has several neat features for older PCs. :) :D

However, my screen/image quality is very poor. Appears that I configured the XWindows file very poorly. I have an AOC monitor and a SiS 5597/5598 chip. Assistance appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You need the specs for the monitor and you need to google the module/driver for the chipset to see if it is installed.

Oh yes, did the installer detect the monitor? Or did it just use generic? Most of the new distros have a wizard of some kind which will write the configuration files for you if you can google up the specifications for the monitor.

This was just covered. Thanks. No defaults detected. Better to enter custom info. from the manuals.

Vectorlinux is indeed great : fast as all devils in hell together , but their X-configuration needs a little more work.
I didn't get my monitor settings right . Ever.
And it's not like I have such an exotic one ; CTX PR705F.
Also , the somehow managed to hide LVM quite thoroughly from the KDE.
Not nice , since it defaults to not showing the other partitions....

The specs on the monitor are the specific ranges of operation.

Being that my monitor is a "APPLE" and uses an adapter and is ported through a KVM switch, I had to know all of that stuff and enter it manually. Until RH9, which had an entry for the Sony Multiscan 20se as a choice.

The adapter chipset information you will end up googling in the end will tell you what MODES are available for your monitor.

BTW The modes are the choices of resolution and refresh rate that you set up so you can actually use X properly.

You may be frustrated, but hey--you have a very well set up news group.

All I had were books and google. The news groups were much harder to search then, and mostly contained clueless whining from people WHO NEVER READ THE FAQS.

I dunno, i never really liked Vector Linux. It's great for old hardware, though.

I don't see an ADC monitor though.
Choosing the correct module for your video chipset, inputting the correct horizontal and vertical rates for your monitor and choosing the best available screen size is about all I know to do.
