utmp and wtmp file delete can cause any issue


Hello Guys,

We have a Solaris production,if we delete utmp and wtmp
file from /var what effects will cause on the system

You shouldn't delete them, but rather zero them out. Running "cat /dev/null > /var/wtmp" should do it. The better question is WHY do it?

You can delete them without any problems - unless you are actually USING them for accounting.

You can also turn them off:

I know that is for AIX, but it is easier to read documentation than what oracle has at

again? How is this different from your other 6 threads all dealing with lack of disk space on /var?

Except they're all marked SOLVED, yet here we are.
