Using terminal command sudo apt-get "program" install to install software

Have just installed Mint 14.1 as a change from KDE 13. Only been working with Linux Mint a month or so. KDE had a root terminal I could log into and use - Mint 14.1 doesn't seem to have one. And everytime I type command "sudo apt-get "name of software" install" I get error message that I need a sudo password and it won't take my login pw - in fact, it won't let me even type anything. How to I get root privileges in Mint 14.1? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. By the way, Linux Mint documentation stinks.

sudo does not show the letters you type when typing in your password. This is normal behavior, just type in your password blindly and press the enter key.
