using remote control for mplayer

# uname -a
Linux bt 3.2.6 #1 SMP Fri Feb 17 10:40:05 EST 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
I have ubuntu 10.04(lucid) with gnome-2.30.2
My computer has hd5450 ATI graphic card whose HDMI port is connected to samsung series 4 81cm LCD tv.
I am trying to use my TV remote control to control mplayer
First I did
# apt-get install lirc

Have I selected the right options ?
Now I ran
root@bt:~# irw
and pressed all buttons on my remote but I do not get any message in terminal .

Seems , nobody has used the mplayer via remote.
Or - Am I missing something ?
