Unhappy Using linux as a gateway or router

Hello lords of linux:

I have a wireless setup and would like to use my rig as a wired access point to the internet for my system.

In other words I don't want to buy an adapter for my game system. I want linux to act as an internal dhcp server and issue my game system an IP VIA an internal NIC card on my PC and connect the game system to the internet....

So far I have installed DCHP server on my PC and Placed the wireless card in the DMZ zone.

I planned on using a class A Private address scheme of 10.1.1.1 /24 through 10.1.1.254/24 for my IP addresses

Issues that I have been having is that once the NIC card is configured I lose internet access completely. (error: host name not resolved) and my machine freezes when starting dhcp...

I am still a newbie with linux and I need some guidance PLEASE BE GENTLE WITH ME.

I need help with the entire configuration for this

Guys am I going in the wrong direction??
I want the internal nic to bind with my wireless card.... Is this possible?
Do I need to use nat, pat, or some other masquerade technique to get this device on the web???

I have researched some other methods to this issue but still I am getting no solid solutions.

Internet connection sharing (ICS) looks promising but I am not wired to the router I am connecting wirelessly.

So far about 12 hrs of work and no luck.......

I just went through about the same thing. I was connecting to the internet with a Alltel pcmcia wireless data card. when wireless card was connected everything was fine . but if I started dhcp, everything would stop.

What's happing is eth0 is taking priority over your wireless card. run this as root:
#ifconfig -a
find and make note of the address for your wireless card.
#route del default
#route add default gw 222.222.22.222 (ip address of wireless card)

This should fix your problem until you reboot. I'm still trying to find out how to make this perminant.

Why are you insisting on using DHCP? Just assign a static IP and eliminate a point of failure for yourself. Plus, it's easier to make sure you don't have any unwanted intruders hacking in even if they did bypass the 802.11 security you have set up, they wouldn't be as easily able to guess your subnet and range.
