Quoted from www.java.com instructions. There are very clear instructions here on how to do it all

Go to http://java.com
Click on Get Java Software button
There are two types of installation packages. Linux RPM package or Linux self extracting binary file. Download the package that best suits your needs.

Note: Linux RPM (Redhat Package Manager) uses RPM to install the JRE. In order to use this method, you need to have RPM available on your system. Otherwise use the other option.

they don't know about "debian way"
you need to put blackdown.org in your sources.lst
check out
http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/java-linux-d2.html
Code:
deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/debian/ woody main non-free
deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/debian/ unstable main non-free
or this
debian people don't have to fart around with java installers like everyone else
