Using dd to make an .iso image of a MAC install DVD

Hi All,

I am trying to make a bootable HD or USB drive of the MAC OS. I have a shiny new Mac Retina but it does not have a DVD drive. I do have a nice Desktop with Fedora Linux on it with a DVD drive so I put the DVD there and used dd to make a .iso image of the Mac install DVD. Then I used scp to copy the .iso image from my Fedora box to my Mac Retina. All went well so far but then when I am on my Mac and try to mount the .iso image it says "The following disk images couldn't be opened" and in the dialogue box below this title is says "not recognized". I thought dd made bit copies to an image file. Theoretically this should work. What am I doing wrong? Do I need some extra library for dd to work on Mac DVDs?

Thank you in Advance!

BSB

isnt the mac os already installed on the mac pc ? if not how are you using it ?
show us the output of the file command to make sure it created the iso correctly.

i dont suppose there is a way to put the iso on a usb drive and just boot from usb ?

on the mac try loop mounting it:
Code:
mount -o loop mac-os.iso /whatever/floats/your/boat

I doubt dd would work with much. Usually those goofy mac disks are in an odd format. Second is they might have some protection on them. Lastly might be the legality of this.

I'd contact Apple and see if they sell a recovery disk or if they provide some way to make a usb recovery disk.
