using cnmbook with vodafone K3565 mobile connect pay-as-you-go
I have a vodaphone mobile connect K3565 as payg package. (NB: this is not a contract concept. You buy the dongle and top it up in units of 15 quid only, in your own time withing 180 days) The USB dongle works fine on my Toshiba laptop under Vista. My problem is that I can't get it working on my CnmBook from Maplins.
Yes the K3565 stick works fine (with laptop using Vista)from the same location at which it doesn't work with the CnmBook. Yes the CnmBook works fine on WiFi on my BT broadband. Yes, I have upgraded the CnmBook to V70. Yes I have followed all instructions on http://194.150.201.35/cnmlifestyle/downloads/3g.htm Yes I have set the device type GPRS, account web, password web, access point name APN to pp.vodafone.co.uk . Yes (with WiFi turned off at source) the CnmBook recognises the USB stick, attempts to connect, but eventually times out. So here is my question: does the Vodaphone K3565 on payg work with CnmBook? My current hypothesis is that the CnmBook, which uses a version of Debian, uses a vodafone dongle driver which predates the introduction of the new Vodafone payg system. Further, I speculate that if I were on a Vodafone contract instead of payg, the equivalent dongle might work with CnmBook. Please can anyone refute or confirm these? Many thanks Mike |
I assume you mean Vodafone UK.
I have just completed a similar set-up on Debian, using the details you gave it didn't work, however change APN to "pp.internet" and it works. |
Still no-go with cnmbook plus K3565 vodafone
Thanks to all who have made suggestions about this. In my case it makes no difference whether I type in pp.internet or internet or leave it blank - none work for me. I really think it is a driver problem. The key question still remains unanswered for me: is there anybody, just one person in the UK will do, who actually owns a cnmbook using V70 and a PAYG vodafone K3565 who actually has it working on the mobile network? I have contacted the cnmbook help people and they came back to ask the K code on the dongle, I gave them "K3565" and they disappeared for ever. By the way, my cnmbook continues to work fine on WiFi, and my vodafone dongle continues to work fine on laptop running Vista.
Thanks again. Mike |

I bought mine from Maplins late yesterday evening, and a K3565 from Vodafone. At first I was worried it might not work, as I had read some of the problems people have had with this dongle, but I needed one to connect my 17" laptop to the internet when I am on holiday, so was not too worried if it did not work. So, what did I do? Followed the instructions on cnmlifestyle site 3G support pages and tried it - probably got the same error message as everybody else. Doing a few more searches, I saw a mention about changing internet setting to pp.internet and it worked. Nothing more to do So, V70 cnmbook (Maplin Minibook) & K3565 do work. Hope this helps everybody. Sharpo |
cnmbook query
Hey Sharpo, you are absolutely right. With "pp.internet" in the mobile properties, the Cnmbook works perfectly with a vodafone K3565 dongle and a good mobile signal. Many many thanks for the tip. I could have sworn that I had tried every possible permutation of all the suggestions offered. Guess I boobed out there. Hooray!

more on cnmbook with K3565 payg
The cnmbook definitely works fine with vodafone pay as you go. Check you have the V70 upgrade to the operating system (it shows up V70 top left corner of screen on initial switch-on). Insert the payg dongle and click on mobile network on startup page. It comes up wireless connection wizard, GPRS, web, *** (being password web). The phone number must show *99# Now click on properties.
It comes up GPRS Property. The Access Point Name shows as pp.internet (all lower case) and phone number *99# . Click OK. It goes back to Wizard. Click on Connect. It works for me at this point. I recently took my cnmbook to the lake district and experimented with connecting to web and reading Wikipedia in the hills. (Yes, I know...)I measured the signal strength with my mobile phone. When signal strong, the cnmbook connected to the Net fine. When the signal was two or three bars, the mobile worked fine but the cnmbook reported Timed Out ie could not connect. Not suprising. Anyway, the point is that the cnmbook uses the same report "Timed Out" for both those cases where the signal strength is low and for any other reason (like incorrect access point name etc.) Keep trying! And here's the thing, don't do as I did and get the cnmbook damp. OK I had it in a plastic shroud, but some moisture got in. After drying out, the cnmbook still works on external power, but the battery fails totally. I don't know yet whether the battery is dead, or the charging circuit damaged. Anyone know where to get a new battery for the cnmbook? Thanks Microbe7 |
Hi microbe7,
Many thank for your reply. HAve wiped the cmbook again - and re applied firmware. Entered settings as per your post - omitting DNS this time - still no joy. Wondering if it is being tempremental due to low signal - on my windows laptop it is showing as a low one - might take it out for a walk later and try again. Thanks again for all you help. OPENING TAB ACCOUNT wap PASSWORD wap PHONE NBR *99# PROPERTIES TAB COMMON ACCESS POINT NAME pp.internet PHONE NBR *99# OPTIONS TAB both boxes should be ticked ADVANCED TAB box should be ticked SETTINGS TAB should be on default Also found it only worked if Dongle was connected to extension lead supplied with the dongle and the plugged into rear USB port.
