Question userdel: PAM authentication failed

I am attempting to delete a user who is no longer in the company.

I am logged in as root and tried running "userdel -r dude" and all I get is the message:

userdel: PAM authentication failed

I tried to find an explanation for this error and was not successful. I'm not even too sure about what PAM is. But, how can root be denied the ability to delete users?

Thanks

PAM = Pluggable Authentication Modules. Its easy, if one of the modules says "no way, you cant do this", then you cant. Perhaps looking at the current PAM configuration files will help shed some light, /etc/pam i think its called. There should also be lots of files that look like program configuration files in a PAM directory somewhere in /etc.

(look at wiki for more information, its a good source. http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/PAM)

Thanks for the info. The only settings I found in the /etc/pam.conf dealt with fcron.

I found about 200 different directory listings for pam.conf. It looks like every application and module on this firewall has its own pam.conf. I guess I'll have to just wade through them until I find the right one.

The wiki information will definitely help.
