User name and password

Hi, I am new to Linux so might seem a bit dim lol. My Grandson has loaded Ubuntu onto my old laptop but did`nt put in a user name or password. Can I put them in without deleting it and starting again, thanks Tom

Welcome to LQ!!!

He might have set the user account to login automatically instead of specifying the password. In Ubuntu feature to login without password is available.

You did not mention which version of Ubuntu you are using, anyways here are two links which explains about how to create a user:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/15640...-user-accounts

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddUsersHowto

In the same panel you should be able to see your existing user account and you can uncheck the box to automatically login.

Hi, thanks for the welcome and reply. I tried all the suggestions on the two links with no response. The user panel doesn`t show a name or password and won`t work with the keyboard. The version is 14.04

I typed in GUI Tools and the answer was that they could not be enabled as the required packages are not installed on this computer. Hope this helps

Are you able to perform any administrative task using this account? If yes, then your account is configured with sudo which is good.

Just saw your next reply: "I typed in GUI Tools and the answer was that they could not be enabled as the required packages are not installed on this computer. Hope this helps". What does that mean?

I don't believe it is possible to install Ubuntu and not have at least one user account with a password. Call your grandson and get it.

Haven`t a clue T3R just trying to make sense of one of the links you sent me.
Phoned my Grandson and he didn`t put user name or password in so I think I`ll delete it all and start from scratch again.

May be he forgot but it is just not possible that he wasn't prompted to create an account during the install process. Did you try opening the terminal on system and type: whoami to find out which user account you are logged in with?

Mr Tom 04-16-2015 12:19 PM

No terminal on system

veerain 04-16-2015 01:13 PM

He means GNOME Terminal or KDE terminal (Konsole).

michaelk 04-16-2015 01:20 PM

This might help. There is a terminal but you just need to know how to get there.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

To go back to logging in with a username and password.

Hi MichealK, thanks for the advice but I don`t think it had been loaded properly as it kept freezing when I went online. A friend is coming round to reload it with user name and password so hopefully it will work properly. What I have seen of Linux I like so fingers crossed.

If you have a recent version of Ubuntu you should be able to access a terminal by simultaneously holding downl the key: Ctrl+Alt+t or by clicking the Dash icon (the Ubuntu logo in the upper left of the Desktop) and typing in terminal. If that doesn't work, might as well reinstall.

Welcome aboard.

I suspect the grandson loaded the distro in OEM form, which would mean Mr Tom would have to do the name/location/password setup himself.
