user execute mount?

Hi all,

basic question. I use open suse 10.1. I found that 'mount' located at /bin/mount. but why can't the user execute it? because as fas as i read /bin directory holds executable which is user-wide.

1- What kind of message do you get when you try to mount a drive?

2- What is your path set to? ( echo $PATH )

Here it is my PATH and the location of my mount

Code:
# echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin:/usr/lib/mit/bin:/usr/lib/mit/sbin:/usr/lib/qt3/bin
# whereis mount
mount: /bin/mount /sbin/mount.cifs /sbin/mount.smbfs /usr/share/man/man2/mount.2.gz /usr/share/man/man8/mount.8.gz
# mount -o loop images/cf.img mydir/
mount: only root can do that
and it is somewhat make we weird also that if for example i do:

Code:
# PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin
i can execute my files in /sbin directory, like grub.
can anyone explain this basic things?

thanks
