Most likely permissions? What way are you trying
to start X after login (both as root and as normal
user)? Do you get any sensible messages in the
users ~/.xsession-errors ?

This is also a common problem when the /home partition is full. Check with 'df'

i am using startx command to login.. both from user & root.

there arent any error messages listed.. only thing listed is waiting for x to shutdown.

what sort of permissions should i set/reset ??
i was able to go in previously .. all of a sudden its not allowing me ..

now i am facing more strange problems.. when i am browsing, some times all the windows opened, in all the workplace vanishes.. similar to an explorer crash.(if u people remember windows) .. it happens randomly no specific time gap... and happens only when i am browsing..
out of the context, when i am trying to run yahoo messenger, its giving segmenatation error..

presently i am enjoying my struggle with linux..

That sounds like you're running out of RAM. If there's
no free memory (and swapper a) full or b) non-existent)
Linux will randomly kill an application that it thinks can
be disposed off ...

What's the output of
free
on your machine?

That could well be because ymessenger you're running
is compiled against a different version of glibc. If this is
not the case, and you encounter segfaults with other apps
as well you're likely to have a bad memory module.

Tink
