Use rescue disk to fix x problem?

I want to boot debian without auto-starting x... can I use the rescue disk to get to the command line, to then reconfigure boot process?

you can boot up normally and then edit your /etc/inittab file to read default runlevel 3 instead of 5.

unless there is some reason why you can't get into X or don't want to right now.

the problem is, x is screwed up, and i can't get to the command line once it boots..
