Wink use dvd-ram under linux

Can someone tell me how to write to a dvd-ram drive (Panasonic LF-D521) under Ubuntu (or any other) Linux, preferably using the GUI (Gnome or KDE, etc.)?

Gnome will detect when I insert a DVD-RAM (or DVD-RW) disk and I can read it, but not allowed to write to it - it thinks the disk is read only. I can understand why the DVD-RW might not be allowed, since packet writing is perhaps not standardised on this type od disc, but DVD-RAM always supports UDF packet writing.

Also, can someone answer this question - where do people get detailed information about Linux? Is it trial and error? Don't answer "from the forums" because this does not answer where the information on the forums comes from.

Many thanks,

ptay1685

To write to a dvd-ram (or rw) you can use k3b in the gui. Its a nice graphical tool that uses cdrecord and others to write to cd's and dvd's.

To get info about linux, it depends on your questions. Try to use man:issue in your file manager (konqueror or the gnome equivalent) to see info about "issue". Your system does have a lot of info already. Another good resource is www.tldp.org, "the linux documentation project".

Good luck!

Thanks! I had not realised K3b would handle DVD-RAM.

But is there no way to do it via Nautilus or other GUI file manager via drag and drop, as you can in Windows?
