usb scanner bind hp:linusb:002:005 to /dev/usb/scanner0

Hi,

I have a usb scanner HP ScanJety 5200C.

When I start xsane as normal user the program does not find the scanner.
When I start xsane as root user, it finds the scanner and everything works perfectly.

How do I make the scanner available to normal users ??

/dev/usb/scanner0 has got 666 rights.
/etc/sane.d/hp.conf has been changed to look for /dev/usb/scanner0

Thanks a lot !

not sure but doesnt the user need execute permissions on the scanner? I dont think they need write permission, seeing as its a reading device. U might just want to give it 755 instead, although you'd think that 6(read/write) would be enough ...

yeah. you need permissions to mount and unmount the scanner.

go into your /etc/fstab as root and change the mount options, and change the mount settings of /dev/usb/scanner0 to user. That'll make everybody on the system to mount and unmount (enable and disable) your scanner.

chmod + s "interfacefile" wil do!

What is my interface file ? Im not sure /dev/usb/scanner0 is actually pointing to my scanner ...

okay I'm such a n00b I haven't even installed yet (chose mandrake 10.0 because I've been in windows since they started tonz of years ago.... need a n00b-friendly GUI and stuff) and I'm getting this hardware checklist thing done. I've got the 5200c and so far, it's the only thing I haven't found driver/support for. Am I missing something here? I think I need someone to hold my hand....:-(

Thanks for any help!!
