usb devices are attached to host os. You have to explicitly tell VitrualBox to detach usb from host and attach it to guest. at any given time usb are either attached to host or guest.

While the XP virtual machine is running, goto Devices -> USB Devices and select the usb device. that usb device is removed from host and attached to guest (in this case xp). when you safely remove usb device from guest, it will be attached back to host again.

Forgot to mention, have you installed VirtualBox Extension Pack? if not, then do following steps:

1. Download VB extension pack: VirtualBox 4.1.18 Extension Pack

2. Install ext pack:
Code:
$ sudo VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.18-78361.vbox-extpack
3. Recompile the vbox module:
Code:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
4. follow steps in post #2

Note: the latest version of VirtualBox is 4.2.12. i recommend you install the latest version

Don’t extract, just install extension pack using VBoxManage. If there is version conflict, then choose the proper VirtualBox and its corresponding Extension Pack from following link. I still recommend you to install latest version 4.2.12.

Version 4.2.12:
VirtualBox
Extension Pack

Older Versions:
VirtualBox (Old Builds)

While the extension packs may be needed you have to highlight winsxp & go to settings in vbox before starting wins system.
It's listed under usb settings.
