Question Usb not detected


I have a red hat 2.6.2 version and it does not detect my usb drive when i insert it into the slot.. what should i do?.

ps. the computer is not connected to internet and also does not detect the usb drive

sorry .. not much help over there..

just that if i insert a pen drive into the slot the drive does not blink as its supposed to and there is no icon in redhat that allows me access to the drive.

the pen drive works. i used fedora core 6 and immediately an icon popped up allowin me access.. what do i have to do to get the same result in red hat

Your RedHat system doesn't seem to have the automount functionality available. As a matter of fact, a production server is not supposed to mount all kinds of devices at runtime, for security reasons. Fedora, on the other hand, is a bleeding-edge testbed for common users, as a test bed for everything, so it obviously has automounting available.

In your case run /sbin/fdisk -l to list all available devices and to find the device name of your USB drive, and then mount that device to some mountpoint of your choice. You need to be root for that, of course.
