USB mount as CD in Ubuntu 8.04 hardy

hello.
saw very many posts about USB mounting problems. none is getting to the point that USB stick tries to mount as CD with UTF filesystem.
but it's not CD. it's Kingston 4Gb stick. so inserting stick eds up with invalid mount option error.

maybe I can correct mount options. but what if I insert CD? it will mount then FAT.

any suggestions? sorry if I missed someting, but honestly I red very many posts about it.

Did you make any changes to your /etc/fstab file? A wrong entry there could force the machine into constantly mis-mounting a device.

no, I did not make any changes. but it mounts UTF filesystem when I insert stick.
I tried gconf-editor and remved the UTF8 option but no success.

Automounting removable devices is handled by UDEV/HAL in the 2.6 kernels, but I don't know if there is any Ubuntu-specific packages beyond that.

Though both HAL and UDEV should certainly be installed, as they are core components in modern distributions.
