Usb Modem Support - help please

I am relatively new to Linux and have been battling with my Winmodem for some time now, After a long time of (fruitless) effort I have decided to invest in an external modem (I can only access 56k where I live).

I am thinking of buying a Usb modem, could someone tell me what the advantages would be of going the USB route and should I expect more compatability issues than if I was to buy Serial?

I am running Mandrake 9.1

Thankyou in advance

Drake9.1 supports god-knows-how-many usb modems; it is the best choice.
