USB HID mouse driver on 2.6 kernel

Hi,
I am litle bit newbie in linux not as in usb. So i have to write a usb mouse driver .I have gone though no of docs or some snippet part of code.
I am not getting one thing is that to implement a mouse driver on linux is probing function/method required?
or probing is only for host driver prospective and if it is required for usb function driver then actually why ?

Please clear this doubt.I am waiitng for your reply.

Thanks
