USB External HD on Linux-=mounting problems

In fstab I have the line /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda ext2 defaults 1 2 .I don't know exactly what I'm telling the OS by doing this & it won't mount, but when I boot Disk Management is able to see the entry. The Hardware Browser also see's it. But the only time I was able to get it to successfully mount was when the entry read like this /dev/sda /mnt/sda ext2 defaults 1 2 . Even then when the PC booted and the OS loaded successfully, I never was able to get a system icon reflecting the new HD.

Have you formatted it as ext2?

Does /mnt/sda exist?

If you don't know what you're telling it with that fstab entry, why do you expect it to work?
