us robotics external modem

I am running damnsmall 2.4 via usb pen on acer aspire t135...works great but cannot connect to internet.

The tower runs xp and uses an internal sm56 win modem so I am useing the external for dsl.us robotics 14.4 sportster

rather old but on hand

the problem is when I boot the terminal ready lit flicks on several times suggesting signal but when I open pppdial and click dial the ternal ready lite comes on and stays on but does not dial.

I try echo atdt1234567 > /dev/ttyS0 many times and once or twice it gave a dial tone but no consistancey

never dial tone when dialing

all info is correct for dialup and works fine on hd install on another machine.

have try all bios options for irq etc...likes 3f8 irq4 ttyS0..no terminal ready lite other wise.

wondering if the serial port is the issue as the modem worked for win95 last used or is the modem a problem due to age..wondering if getting a newer external is worth it or if a different computer is required
thanks for any

I don't know DSL, but what does your /etc/serial.conf look like?

Cheers,
