URGENT - error: cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES

Hi All,

I am new to Linux, I am using RHEL 5.3, I was trying to install "Galeon(Web Browser)" as a "root".

I got a error saying....,

"error: cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES"

Can anyone help me in resolving this issue. As I said I am new to Linux, if the solution is clear and simple then I can understand it easily.

Thanks in Advance,

Usman.

First, and very importantly on this forum, it's not urgent to anyone but you, so please don't put URGENT in your titles.

The first thing is, do you have a redhat subscription, in which case you should use it and call them.

The second thing to do is check whether or not that directory already exists, so show the output of "ls /usr/src/redhat"

Finally, please show exact command and more than one line of error messages.

The ( empty ) directory tree '/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES'
etc. etc., is created by installing the package 'rpmbuild'.
The output of 'rpm -ql rpmbuild' :
.
.
/usr/src/redhat
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/athlon
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i486
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i586
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i686
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
/usr/src/redhat/SPECS
/usr/src/redhat/SRPMS
.
.
.....

What a DIK. Any other words we can't use? Talk about user unfriendly. did it really throw your day completely off cause someone said "urgent". did you think that possibly he really thought it was urgent to the rest of the world, or maybe (cut him some slack here) he was saying that it was urgent because it was urgent to him>>

Oh, and you can only have one first thing...not two first things.
