Upgrading Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04
 
Hello,

I have a laptop (amilo pi 1536) with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphic card. I run dual boot (Ubuntu with kde and Windows XP). When I installed in my laptop Ubuntu 8.10 it worked fine. It asked me to upgrade it to 9.04 and so i did. But when i finished downloading and restart the laptop, it shows me the splash screen and then turn to black. How can I fix this problem; Can I return back to 8.10;

Turning black !! Sorry couldnt figure it out , please provide more info.
But the process you had did is irreversible

Sounds like a display problem. I would not recommend downgrading - you just need to figure out what the problem is and fix it. Does it give you a command prompt or just a black screen?

If it is a display problem you can use a boot option to tell it to not load X windows on bootup so you can get a prompt to fix the problem.

I've also got an Amilo 1536 Pi, with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.

I did install Ubuntu 9.04 from a bootable USB memory, of the strange reason that the DVD-drive disappeared (it got power but it completely lost contact with the motherboard/BIOS).

So I was taking the opportunity to install Ubuntu 9.04 (since I couldn't re-install Windows at all) by making a bootable USB memory stick and was booting from that device.

Everything went ok, and I installed Compiz and such stuff to have the fun newbie parts as 3D-cube etc. - I did even install wine to have my essential Spotify running smoothly in Ubuntu.
But, for some reason I couldn't get TV-out (S-VHS out) to work, the TV wasn't even recognized. This is also essential for me, music and TV-out are the main use of my computer at home (apart from surfing and mailing).

I did read about this, and followed some tutorials as the Linux newbie I am, the binary drivers howto in the Ubuntu help section for ATI/Radeon to install the proprietary fglrx drivers etc.

First of all I couldn't find any proprietary drivers in System-Administration-Hardware Drivers - so some tutorials about automatic installs didn't work. But I could install the drivers by downloading them from ATI site and then follow some manual steps, but I had to change some parameters in the install (sh ./driverfilename.run --buildpkgandinstall Ubuntu/jaunty if I remember correctly).

I have re-intalled Ubuntu a couple of times now, skipping the Compiz install due to the word that says that the fglrx-drivers or something wasn't compatible with Compiz or the other way around.

At some stages I got a propertiary driver in the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers - but then ATI catalyst control center couldn't start with a message telling something about that the fglrx drivers wasn't correctly installed or something.

However in every attempt to make it work it always ends up with an almost black screen on re-boot (with the logo and progressbar in wrong graphic mode strangely placed with noise and strange colors at multiple positions) - a memory dump of a screen that couldn't be displayed by the current drivers maybe. The computer hangs at that stage/state also. So I have to make a new re-install every time that occurs.

The fglrxinfo command didn't show any expected output when it seemed that I had succeeded in installing the proprietary drivers.

It's a time consuming process and I lack one thing in this world, and that's time, I have to start Ubuntu using the non-persistent version from the USB-memory to be able to google for solutions and to write this reply in this thread - I will end this documentary session by putting down some links that I have or will follow in my attempts to make this work - I'll probably not find references to all tutorials and tips since I've re-installed a couple of times and I didn't type the links down on paper. I'll post if I have any success.


any help from someone that already managed this and got it to work would be of great interest and greatly appreciated.
