upgrading software question

I tried to upgrade my java runtime, gtk, and python software in my suse 9.2
I thought that in yast, I found the older versions, and clicked on them to make the green update icon appear, when the installation was finished, it was the same version number.
I guess I need to install the updated packages manually.
Do I need to remove the older versions or will the installation overwrite these versions?

Hi roller24
To upgrade a package in YaST you must have an newer version available in the source installation server which is active.
The line with the package name in YaST appears blue when a newer version is available.
You must refresh the source installation server before doing an update.
Furthermore if you choose to update a package manually, first download the rpm package and run in a console under root login :
cd <dir_where_package_is>
rpm -Uvh <package.rpm>

No need to delete a previously installed package, with the -U option of the rpm command the package will be updated to the newer version. (the same in YaST)
Best wishes.
