Upgrading Portage

My gentoo server is running 2.6.27-r8 and upon trying to install nfs-utils among other things I see that packages are masked as my version of portage supports EAP1 and I require EAP2. I am able to emerge --sync.

My question is what should I be aware of before I type 'emerge portage' ? Could I break my system by doing this ?

Is unlikely you will break gentoo by that, anyway you could provide more information in order to support you.
