upgrading gnome, how to?


i have gnome 2.4 and want to update it to a newer one. however, i don't have an idea how i do it exactly. moreover, i have searched for tutotial using google, but didn't find what i needed. fortunately, i know i have you guys, whom i can trust, and i will be happy if someone gives me a link to a tutorial, which explains how to do so step by step.

As a general thing, please say which distribution and version you are running.

GNOME and KDE are complex systems that depend on various other parts of the system. So the safest way is to upgrade your distribution.

GARNOME is a system that will automatically download, compile and install a new version of GNOME. The catch is that you have to make sure that the rest of your system meets the requirements for that version of GNOME. The latest version of GNOME uses a set of system components called Project Utopia for disk management, and reworking an existing installation for Utopia is complicated. "Upgrade your distribution" is probably the best bet.

Fedora Core 3 and Ubuntu both include GNOME 2.8 and Project Utopia, and are pretty good distributions in all other respects as well.
