Upgrading Gaim In Slackware/KDE
 

I have a pretty outdated version of Gaim installed on my box, and the file transfer for AIM is buggy. I want to upgrade to the latest version. On the Gaim sourceforge site, the have downloads for the client, but not for my distribution (Slackware 10.1). From what i've read so far, it looks like i'll have to compile the source of the program. How would I go about doing this?

The file extention options available for the source download are:
.tar.bz2
.tar.gz
.src.rpm
Which would I download?



I'd also like to install some kind of web media player so that I can view embedded media files on web pages. Are there any you guys reccomend?

Why don't you look on the Slackware site and get the one Pat already built for 10.2 or current?

Ok I downloaded and unzipped the gaim-1.5.0-i486-1.tgz file, but i'm not sure how to get it running. In KDE, I go to the folder:
file:/root/gaim-1.5.0-i486-2/gaim-1.5.0-i486-1/install

In that folder, there is a ShellScript file called doinst.sh

When I execute it, nothing happens.
Is there something i'm missing?

You don't unzip those files, you install them with installpkg, e.g.

# installpkg gaim-1.5.0-i486-1.tgz.

You may also be able to use upgradepkg.

Or use pkgtool, which is part of the Slackware installer. cd to the directory where you downloaded the .tgz, su to root, then type pkgtool and use option C.
