The easiest method is to back up all your documents, files, and settings to an external drive, and then follow this simple 4-step how-to:

The best way is to backup and clean install everything. That would be more convenient. Upgrading can bork your system if not done correctly. Even if upgrade goes smoothly, some applications may be rendered useless. I had Canon MF4100 installed on windows and shared and working with Karmic. Upgraded to Lucid and its drivers just vanished. It also needed some libraries those were in Karmic but removed from Lucid.

Smile Upgrading from Ubuntu Jaunty to Ubuntu 10.10.

Hello,
Thanks for your tip I will take your advice and backup and do a clean install.
Is it still safe to run Ubuntu Jaunty since they have stopped providing security updates?
All the best.

Since Jaunty will not receive any updates, it is always safe to upgrade to the newer version. But it will depend on how you use your system as well.

When installing a refresh version of Ubuntu, I would advise having your /home directory installed on a separate partition. This way, if you have to reinstall the OS, you won't have to backup everything Obviously, I'm not saying DON'T do backups, but it's good not to have to reinstall all your user files each time you do a fresh install.
