When trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, an error message saying (summary) :
"Cannot find ubuntu-minimal which is necessary to proceed with the upgrade. This is a serious error. Please report as a bug against Update Manager and include files in the /var/dist-upgrade/log."

Perhaps the suggestion in post #2 in this thread will help fix the problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1751152
Also remember to disable any third party repos before upgrading as it says there.

If the problem persists, perhaps you could post the contents of the /var/dist-upgrade/log file. Any errors reported there may help in diagnosing the problem.

I agree with spiky0011. I always do clean installs of Ubuntu. I never do dist-upgrades, and I never have problems.
If you do decide to do a clean install you may as well go with Ubuntu 11.10, which is the latest version.
If you do not like the new Unity desktop, you could consider installing Xubuntu with XFCE, or install my personal *buntu favorite, the fast and light Lubuntu with the LXDE desktop.
