Upgrading from RH 8.0 to RH 9.0...

I know RH is a dying breed, but I've been running a server with it for a while, and I'm comfortable with it (well, sort of). My server is running RH 8.0 (updated with all the latest RH RPMs via the up2date service). My question(s):

How easy is it to transition my server from RH 8.0 to 9.0? Is it just a matter of booting off the RH 9.0 disks and selecting "upgrade" (assuming there is such an option)? For that matter, again assuming it is a somewhat easy proposition to upgrade from one version to another, should I skip 9.0 altogether and go from 8.0 straight to Fedora?

What about all the stuff I have set up under 8.0 (Apache, Samba, various other servers)? Will their setting be retained, or will I need to reconfigure all of them from a default installation set up?

I'm building another system on which to install other distros and set them to ultimately replace RH on my server, but I'd like to get my current server up to date as much as possible...

Thanks for any opinions or assistance!

If Apache, SAMBA and similar packages have simply been customized via config files and are the stock RedHat-supplied versions, the upgrade should go very painlessly. Boot the RH9 CD, it will automatically find an RH8.0 install and offer upgrade as an option. Simple as that...

PS. The only thing I've found that gets upgraded but not switched is printing (I think). 8.0 used LPD where by default RH9 uses CUPS. I really like CUPS a ton better.. There's an applet somewhere in system settings to switch printing from LPD to CUPS. If you make use of SAMBA shared printers very much note that in SAMBA's smb.conf config file there is an entry to tell SAMBA what your printing system is and it will need to be changed to CUPS if you do this.

Thanks, wdingus! I suspected it would work that way, but the consequences of my assumption being wrong were to grave to proceed without someone who's done it saying upgrading actually works without nuking your current configurations...

I don't use any shared printers, so CUPS shouldn't be a problem.

What do you thinks about Fedora? Is it better than RH 9.0?

Haven't tried Fedora yet.. Kind of treating it like a RedHat .0 release at this point. Will check it out when they get Core Release 2 ready :)

Just thought I'd finish the thread -- the upgrade from RH 8 to RH 9 went off without a hitch, as predicted.

Thanks again for your reassurance, wdingus.
