Is it necessary to delete ubuntu 8.04 before installing ubuntu 8.1 ? What is the procedure for upgrading without deleting ; if any?

I think you will be less likely to run into problems if you do a clean install of 8.10 rather than trying to upgrade. I've never tried to upgrade, so I don't know from experience, it's just what I have read. Just run the live CD and choose to format your existing 8.04 partitions when you do the install.

If you do want to upgrade, it should be fairly simple. Press Alt+F2 and you should get a Run Command dialog box. In that box, type
Code:
kdesudo "adept_manager --dist-upgrade"
That should update you to 8.10 directly over the internet (no need to download and burn the CD).

The best place to get information about upgrading Kubuntu is at the Ubuntu.com site:

I installed Kubuntu 8.1 via cds burned from downloads both from an australian mirror and also from canonical and had the same problem !!! When booting the program stalled when it got to the kde screen.My comp is an acer veriton 5500 on wnich I have W2k and was previously experimenting more or less successfully with 8.04. WHY? I have reloaded 8.04 which is working;
however after loading 298 files via update manager I now have 2 kernels 22 and 16.My son tells me not to worry just make sure I always boot the same version which he amended for me.

I have a system which has 6 kernels on it. There is no problem with this. The grub program will stop to display the kernels available at boot time and you can boot an older kernel if you wish to. If you just hit return or let it time out it will boot the newest kernel. This is normal operation. After you are satisfied that everything is working fine with the newest kernel you can remove the older kernels.

There are instructions here for removing older kernels:
