Upgrade question (please help)...
 

I have Mandrake 9.0 installed and want to upgrade to 9.1.

I can't seem to find any specific steps on the internet on how I should go about doing this procedure.

I've only been messing with linux for about 6 mnths so I'm still a nooob at this and seems like I will be for a long time. Linux has a steepe learning curve.

I have a ppp conection to the internet and have the Shorewall firewall installed basically so that me and my girlfriend can share the modem connection at the same time if need be. (I know it sounds chinsey :) but we have no dsl or cable modem technology as of yet)

Everything is working just fine right now and before I decide to upgrade I was hoping that someone could point me to some documentation or a link that describes how to pull this off without messing up my exsisting WORKING setup.

Would I need to stop certain daemons that are running like dhcpd,shorewall firewall, ect.,ect...when I perform the upgrade?

Is there an actual upgrade package from mandrake 9.0 to 9.1? Is there a link for this?

I was told that I could do this from KPackage manager but I've heard allot of bad things upgrading this way.

It's generally considered asking for trouble if you upgrade instead of make a fresh install. So many things would have changed between distro versions that usually a few things will break or not work right.

Can you back up your /etc config files and /home elsewhere, and then format the partitions and start again? Even then you'll probably want to just manually compare configuration settings intead of paste them back over.

When you upgrage you boot off the cd like a regular install, so there's no linux running anyway, let alone any deamons, and no single package is simply installed/upgraded.
