Not sure if I should consider myself a newbie or not, as I have been using fedora 1 for some years, but I only installed it as per the manual and then used it to web surf, didn't delve into the guts of linux. The other forums seem to be speaking languages largely beyond me.

Anyway, I find I need to upgrade now. I have tried upgrading to fed 8 from the DVD, but I get the message 'cannot mount /dev/hda1', which is my windows partition. Looking at the release notes , it says fed 8 expects all partitons to be labeled, as if this is a new requirement. Using /sbin/blkid I see hda1 is not labeled. Is this the problem? How can I label it? Looking at a 'how to' site, I found e2label and tune2fs, but it seems they only work with ext2 or ext3 partitions.

In the bigger picture, I am expecting too much to upgrade 1 to 8? Should I give up and just install fed 8 from scratch?

Install fedora 12. If you have limited memory on the machine- less than 512M + 64M for graphics, then you can use the lxde live or some other distribution.

it is 100% imposable to upgrade to 8
fedora 8 is also a dead version


that hda issue is do to the fact fedora calls ALL disks as sd ( ide and sata alike)
this changed someplace around fedora 6
just save important data
-- your photos,videos,tax docs ,...
then reformat the drive to ext 4 or blank and install fedora 12
fedora 13 will be out very soon

Thanks John. I thought it might be too much to upgrade. One remaining question: how do I access my bookmarks so I can save and reload those (using Firefox 2.0)?

the firefox in fedora 12 is firefox 3


and firefox 3 nolonger uses the bookmarks.html file it uses a database instead

however if you copy the bookmarks.html file to a backup dvd then to youe NEW home folder
firefox 3 can import it .

but it might NOT be able for the very,very,very old firefox 1 ???? i just do not know if it can import such an old format ?

If you export them as html (default iirc), you can eg email to your yahoo acct, then download and re-import them I think. Ultimately, its only a text file, so you could copy & paste them if necessary.
