updating xorg-x11 with yum on FC3
 

I wanted to install and try out mplayer on FC3 as xine can't seem to play all .wmv files or quicktimes, and I ran across this page:

I checked my system with this page, and I had a few packages missing and a few that were too old. So I logged into a text desktop (ctrl-alt-F6) as root and started up yum. I believe that I have everything updated except for xorg-x11-libs.

When I went to update this, yum gave me a big list of dependencies. I agreed to them and spent two hours downloading the packages (56K modem). During this time, on the xorg-x11 package, the connection dropped out on me twice. Each time I got the connection back up, and did a ctrl-C, the download resumed on a different mirror. After all packages were done downloading, the system didn't update. I tried rebooting, thinking X needed to restart, but, alas, I am still on 6.8.1-12 instead of 6.8.2-1.

Where do I go from here? I shouldn't have to download the files again (I hope), but I don't know were they are, or how to install them (obviously). Any thoughts, suggestions, or musings are much appreciated.

Oh, if you mean for Xine, I used the full codec package from mplayer's site and installed it to /usr/lib/win32. This is also were Xine is pointing to for the wmv and apple quicktime files.
I didn't mean that I didn't have the codecs working, its just that I have about 10 movies that cause Xine to bomb out. So, I thought about giving mplayer a try for thoes and because its supposed to have an easy to install and use firefox plugin.

if you installed a development environment, you can just compile mplayer ( if you want a gui pass --enable-gui to configure, also you'll want to pass --with-codecsdir=/usr/lib/win32 if you decide to go with compiling it). all you need is a stable devel environment and ( if you're building the gui) gtk-1.2.x ( plus -devel on yours) and glib-1.2.x ( and -devel). otherwise, have you added any more repositories to yum for the packages? IIRC the dag repository has an mplayer rpm in it that will not require you to upgrade xorg.

Thanks for your replies _J. I think I'm good with being able to install mplayer (probably from freshRPMs as I don't know how to run IIRC or have dag in my reposiory) now.
All I had to do was run yum again and tell it to update the packages that I asked it to last time. It saw the packages were downloaded already, and corrected its mistake of the previous night by testing the transactions and then installing them.
I'll reboot and see what X identifies itself as now, then install mplayer and let you know what happens.

If xine cannot play some multimedia files, then its usually a codec problem. You need to get the latest ones from the mplayer website and install them into /usr/lib/win32.

Well, I got everything installed, including the plugin for mozilla firefox, and it works good. It plays thoes few files I have from Win 2000 that wouldn't play in Xine (using the same codecs). It could have been that the version of Xine that I'm running is 0.99.3, but this works so I'm not ggoing to worry about it.
