updating kernel


is using apt-get dist-upgrade guaranteed to cause me problems, wha ti'm talking about is updating the kernel from 2.2.20 to 2.4.22?? this occurs in upgrade?

That is not how you install the new kernel you would apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.22-1-??? replacing the ??? with the kernel for your machine to find the available images apt-cache search kernel-image-2.4.22-1-*.
