Updating gcc 2.96

Hi,

the gcc release 2.96 that's been shipped with Mandrake 8.2 is known to be very unstable and buggy, I've already encountered serveral problems compiling a new kernel or just regular software..so the question is:

If I wanted to upgrade gcc 2.96, what's the best way to do this? Should i use rpm packages or source files? I'd prefer rpm's, I don't want to compile a new compiler with that piece fo crap that's just been causing me problems lately.

there is gcc3 shipped with Mandy, you can install it off the CD's, then copy existing gcc executable to some off path location, and make a symlink from gcc3 to point to gcc, i.e
original gcc is located at /usr/bin/gcc the installed gcc3 is under /usr/local/gcc3. Your actions:
mv /usr/bin/gcc /misc/gcc.old
ln -sf /usr/local/bin/gcc3 /usr/bin/gcc
Side note: The actual paths to gcc and gcc3 binaries may vary, explore your system to find the right paths with which or locate commands.

Yup all you have to do is install gcc 3 off the mandrake cd-rom or compile gcc 3.1.1 or gcc 2.95.3

Thank you soooo much guys :-)) I was such a fool, perhaps i should have taken a closer look to the list of installable packages during the installation, it would have saved me a great deal of time. Anyway, I just installed the
gcc version 3.0.4 from the maddy cd and created the symlink, when i check for the gcc version using gcc -v it shows gcc-3.0.4 , so i assume that it worked out correctly.
