Updating from firefox 2.0.0.14 on an acer one aspire

My wife's Aspire One has not been updated since bought in 2008 and scrpt errors are now occuring regularly along with slow performance. Ther is 1.9Gb left out of thE 6-4Gb available (8Gb machine)
The live updater does not work.
It is running Thunar 0.9.0 but I cannot find the Linpus OS version as when I click <help> next to the preferences I get an 'error trying to read Adobe reader'.
I have read some threads here and was exploring but cannot find how to access a command line editor (terminal?).
So now the questions:
How many stages do I need to go through to jump to Firefox 7, ie can I do it in one or need to go through say Firefox 3 then 4 then 5 etc.
I am happy to use direct commands but as mentioned above have not found how to get in to the system. (File manager and view all files)I have read one thread starting $su then mv firefox - will this work for my large update required.
Di I need to update the OS and if so how?
TIA for any help or clues.
Steve

Hi Steve welcome to LQ!

No need. If your hardware and OS can support the recent or latest you can directly install the version. I think Firefox 7 or 8 will work for a 2008 version.

If there is no other indication to launch (the Menu -> Accessories -> Terminal should do) then you may run it:

Press Alt+F2 type 'terminal' <Enter> or press Launch button. Terminal should come up for use. Or if you prefer to go to the console (shell) Press Ctl+Alt+F2 or F3 - F6 whichever can offer; to return to the graphic window press Ctl+Alt+F7, this should bring you up to the graphic window again.

No need. Every Gnu/Linux system always have a terminal emulator and shell.
