updating ALSA

I have SuSE 8.1 and I need to update ALSA to a newer version so that it supports my sound card. Can I do this using YaST?

Do you mean using the Yast online update.
I use SuSE and have never seen any alsa packages updated with yast.
Why not just get 2 rpms from here
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3
I installed alsa-devel-1.0.5-0.pm.0.i586.rpm & alsa-1.0.5-0.pm.0.i586.rpm.

Thanks. What is the best way to install the packages - can I use YaST or should I use rpm from the command line?

You might be able to use yast.
I use the command line.
rpm -Uvh alsa-devel-1.0.5-0.pm.0.i586.rpm
installs it.
If its no better you could remove them
rpm -e alsa-devel.
