upgrade to KDE 3.3 on SuSE 9.1 with rpm
 

Hello. I have downloaded the rpms that are here ftp://ftp.linux.ro/pub/software/kde-3.3-SuSE-9.1/
for SuSE 9.1. From what I saw these include all that says is reqiured at www.kde.org.
But when I do a rpm -Uhv in the directory where i've put all of them i get all sorts of dependencies of programs that were installed and require the libs that i'm about to upgrade. What is the proper way to upgrade to kde 3.3 from rpms?

(I appologise for the inconvenience of giving a link but since the list is quite big I didn't paste it here and also i've downloaded them from there because i have a certain limit that i'm allowed to download and for my provider, that website would not count in the donloaded MB)

If you are using YaST go to menu option "Software" then choose "change source of installation".
You should now be inside the Software Source Media. click on the add tab and select FTP. Under Server Name - type ftp.suse.com, then under Directory on Server - type /pub/suse/i386/9.1/
this will point Yast to the suse ftp server as your installation source, repeat the above but under Directory on Server this time type /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source/
Yast will now take care of all dependency issues. This is the way I upgraded to KDE 3.3.1 yesterday, but I may have to roll the install back to 3.2 because of Kdesktop problems recognising IO devices on install. But I guess that'll have to be another thread. ;)

If you have downloaded all the rpms, store them in a directory and instead of issuing [b]rpm -Uvh *.rpm[b], use Now, run yast2 -> install packages. It should automatically tell you what are the dependencies, and how to solve them

Wow! Thank you. I didn't know you could install packages with yast by using yast2 --install . Thank you very much. I've upgraded to kde3-3 it's just that now i lost all my icons, taskbar or menu, i only see the kde wallpaper. I'll look into that soon but if anyone has any proposals for this i'd be thankful to hear them.
