Update Manager - ERROR: "could not refresh the list of packages"
Howdy...
Mint 14 Nadia Dell Inspiron 9400 I am unable to refresh the list of packages in the Update Manager. Log entry says: -- Error in checkAPT.py, could not refresh the list of packages Tried rebooting with no change. I tried using the following as suggested in another Update Manager thread, and while it worked, it had several errors as shown in the pasted lines below the command. I've extracted and pasted only my entry and the error lines. ================= crlinux@crlinux-MP061 ~ $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade [sudo] password for crlinux: Err http://packages.medibuntu.org quantal Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.medibuntu.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) Err http://packages.medibuntu.org quantal/free i386 Packages Err http://packages.medibuntu.org quantal/non-free i386 Packages W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/quantal/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.medibuntu.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. ====================== Suggestions on the subject question of the Update Manager failure and/or the errors when updated from a console? Thanks! try sudo apt-get clean and sudo apt-get clear

BTW, after I did the update from the console as described in my initial post, the Update Manager reported that my system was up to date. I ran the update command again after the "clean" operation and it reported the same errors as initially. I am running the upgrade command now and all seems to be working. Warning during installation: Warning: No support for locale: en_US.utf8 Is that significant? Otherwise, all seems to have worked without problems. Any other comments? Thanks! Optiker |
...apt-get clear just did the same for me :) perhaps you just need to clean or mod your /etc/apt/sources.list ?

When I tried to RELOAD Synaptic, I got the following error:
====== Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/quantal/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.medibuntu.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. ====== Is it still active and accessible? Comments? Thanks! Optiker |

I opened my sources.list and it's blank. I have a folder sources.list.d and it has 8 text files, four unique, with each of those having the same filename but with an appended .save. For example, ubuntu.list and ubuntu.list.save. The four are: local-repository.list; medibuntu.list; mint.list; and ubuntu.list. Short of posting the namesw in each of those, does that help in any way? Thanks! Optiker |
my only thought is still /etc/apt/sources.list does Synaptic still work? Perhaps this will help http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=147271 other wise someone who knows will see soon

Yes...Synaptic works fine.
I'll check the link, but can't get to it for a while, but will post back if I find anything useful. In the meantime, will check back here in case any additional replies. Thanks! Opiker |

Good morning...Yes, I see that. I guess I had noticed that previously in my random wanderings, but didn't associate it with the current issues. I understand.
I'm not sure there's any need to pursue this further since things seem to be working and I have other issues to pursue...like sound issues which never seem to be completely resolved. Thanks for your help and sticking with me. Optiker |
Cool and that issue I have seen fix it self in time so have a good day and luck.

I am confused with update manager error
E: Type 'NVU' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. I do not know where to go to correct this problem and report?? when I type in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list in terminal DISPLAYED is permission denied???? When I open repository box,, the above is displayed |
If you have the same OS as the OP then you will find that MInt 14 hasn't been supported since last year' which is why OP wasn't getting updates.
I would suggest that you start a new thread with details of your current OS along with the error messages. |

OP: For one thing, you need to remove all repository ppa's with the word 'medibuntu' from your Manager. That repo is extinct. Shuffled off this mortal coil. Joined the bleedin' choir invisible. |
