Update and/or Installation Problem.. Always..
Dear Friends,
I have been using Linux (Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP2) for 3 weeks and I have been trying to install video players for divx and flv files. However, whenever I try to install or update some software, it always come up with dependency problems. The interesting thing is, YAST does not offer a solution for that. I mean the solutions is either not install or ignore the requirement. Once, I tried to ignore the requirements. Then the software didn't start. On the other hand, when I try to find a required lib or something else, either I cannot install because of dependencies again or it produces another dependencies problem. I try to use software management of YAST but couldn't be successful. What do you recommend me ? How to start or where am I wrong ? For instance, today I tried to install mplayer or xine for video playing and encoding. But couldn't manage that. I also tried to install FileZilla. But although it has all the requirements, it doesn't configure the package. And my second question is which repository I should pick from Suse ? 10.x or 11 ? Because mine is Novell Suse, I don't know which one is the best to pick. Waiting for your assistance. Thanks in advance. Ismail |

One thing you could do, is to install mplayer from source (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html), which supports a LOT of file formats, and is easy to install (providing you read and follow the directions) from source. It supports divx and flv files, and has codecs available on their site. |

Thank you very much TBOne and Salasi. I have downloaded SUSE rpm package from mplayer website. Right now, I am trying to install. If not, as you advised, I will try to contact Novell for a solution. BTW, I haven't paid, yet. This is just an evaluation version. Overall, I am happy with it, but in terms of software installing or updating, the libs or dependencies are a big problem especially if you are a newbie. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Dear Friends,
Do you think that having Novell Update repositories in the installation sources can be a problem ? |
Novell/Suse itself is a big problem. Why do you want to support Microsoft's efforts to destroy Linux?

Well... A friend of mine has been using Novell Suse for a long time. And he recommended me to install it. But if I am not wrong, I think I had read somewhere on the web that Novell especially does not install these codecs for legal issues. Anyway, I will be installing Suse 11.0 instead of this one.
BTW, rickh, do you also mean that opensuse is also bad ? If yes, which distro would you recommend to me ? |
